Project: Ogre Dungeon

:: Ogre Dungeon ::

A brave young warrior of noble deeds! You have slayed dragons and rescued towns! Fought the Orcs of the Frontier alongside the Rangers! Stood beside heroes at the battle of whats-it-called... or so you said. The tavern was alive with your tales of adventure. You even promised to save the local village from their terrible curse. Drinks all around--on the house--what a night! But the next morning your fraud was discovered when you tried to skip town.

Now you've got a whopping tavern bill, a village of angry locals, and the matter of a certain tavern maid's honor to deal with.

Looks like you're gonna have to live up to your lies... or die trying!

Start with nothing but play for it all. Brave the depths of the Ogre Dungeon with only one life, one chance to get rich or die trying. Start off as a no-name adventurer and become a thief, a warrior, or even a wizard--all depending on whatever you find along the way. Get in, grab the Golden Ogre, and get out alive--but beware... Legends say a terrible creature sleeps deep within. But beyond even the monsters lurking in the halls, there are many dangers in the Ogre Dungeon. Your deeds along the way will earn your character's name. Along with gold, riches, and glory!

:: Developer Note ::

I know of Rogue's reputation and I've seen many of it's predecessors in play--but I've never played it myself. I've always liked the concept of dungeon diving so I decided to make a Rogue-like of my own. This project was started with beginner to intermediate skills in coding but not enough confidence to try a new engine. So I decided to stick with RPG Maker for comfort but push the engine as much as I could to challenge myself. I had failed previous attempts to develop web and mobile games due to lag and performance issues so I decided that a good growth goal would be to develop the project to run--and run smoothly--on web, mobile, and PC.

Various systems had to be customized of created to make a game like this in RPG Maker. A turn-based movement system. Custom combat and metrics. Event processing and interaction had to be rewritten to detect and interact with one another as well as the player object. In the project's current state, the game plays smoothly on web, mobile, and PC. The combat and mechanics work well but the UI is still pretty rough. The game took roughly 8 months off-and-on to develop from idea to 1.0 version.
